2016 ↔️ 2023
I used to think that I needed to be in-the-know, thin, and wealthy to like the way I looked in clothes.
Most personal stylists want you to believe so, too.
They want you to buy into these lies, so they can sell you the facade: the trendiest pieces, with the right labels, that slim your figure and elevate your status.
I know, because I used to be one of those stylists.
I came up in the industry giving clients trend-based, short-term solutions to deeper, long-term style problems. This is a profitable business model.
The strategy: keep the client coming back for the next fix.
This is a rampant practice in the personal styling industry, and I call BS.
That's FASHION, not style. The fashion industry is a money-making machine, designed to use fear to sell you products that promise the illusion of more privilege.
-
This is why fashion influencers have jobs. If you're in the know, you can buy the "perfect" thing, and your life is cuter and easier. For a moment.
-
This is why shopping feels like a chore. You can FEEL that the system is out of alignment with your values.
-
This is why you blame your body when you don't like how you look. The fashion industry is out of your control. Or is it?
What if we could re-write the narrative? All the GBBO fans will appreciate this:
Imagine that all the clothes you see online and in stores are simply a selection of ingredients, like the pantry in your kitchen.
STYLE is the infinite ways of combining ingredients to create illusion cakes, intricate pastries, aromatic pizza, delicate meringues, and decadent soufflés.
My job is not to sell you a Twinkie. My job is to teach you how to bake.
Great style is so not about the clothes. It's about how you move through the world. It's your integrity, creativity, intelligence, and kindness, worn on the outside.
When we shift our emotional investment away from FASHION and into STYLE, magic happens.
Here's the thing you must know, my friend.
Dressing yourself with YOUR values on display, in the body you inhabit right now, is an act of open rebellion in our culture.
That's why REBEL WOMEN are my peeps. And that includes you.
